After years of placing second or third, the Oracle was voted 2007's best daily student newspaper in the Southeast United States by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Two Oracle staffers also placed individually for their work.

Multimedia Editor and Sports Columnist Kevin Smetana placed first for Sports Column Writing and Editorial Cartoonist Jeff Sheridan placed second for Best Editorial Cartooning.

For placing first, Smetana and the Oracle will go on to compete in their respective categories for best in the nation. Winners will be announced at the 2008 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference. Hosted in Atlanta, the convention will take place Sept. 4-7.

The Oracle placed above the University of Florida's The Independent Florida Alligator, which came in second, and the University of Georgia's The Red and Black, which came in third.

Individual staff awards were based on writer submissions. For the best student newspaper category, SPJ selected three dates in 2007, and all competing publications had to submit newspapers printed on - or as close as possible to - those dates.

This award is shocking. I'm curious, what three dates were these because every Oracle I read has a list of corrections and is barren of anything informative or interesting. (Continued…)

This article should have been saved for April 1st, as the awards and more so the paper are a complete and total joke.

This award is very competitive and from a well-respected source. Congratulations to the Oracle and its staff. This honor is difficult to attain. I wish USF students understood the benefit of a good college daily. (Continued…)

As a pretty recent addition to the Oracle (and not a writer on staff during the period of time for which the recognition was awarded), I can only speak for myself in saying that I work extremely hard to provide balanced, comprehensive news stories for the Oracle as well as informative, substantiated editorials. Congrats to the Oracle staff. While every college paper has areas that can be improved upon, I am generally pleased with the paper in comparison to that of others. (Continued…)

What is the matter with all of you? You all have a really good school paper. I attend another major University in the state, and I hate my paper. In fact I stopped reading it because it would make me so angry. (Continued…)

I completely agree with Renee. As a former staff writer and editor, I know how hard it can be to balance going to school full-time and having to work and pull stories together 5 days a week. (Continued…)

For the past couple of years it has been a two horse race between The Independent alligator and The Oracle, it's nice to see my alma mater set the standard. (Continued…)

The Oracle staff is doing its best with what resourcs it has - its budget and number of staff members pales in comparison to that of UGA and UF. The staffers work their butts off to keep the student body informed. (Continued…)
